I am purposely putting this turkey hunting article in the RHT in the middle of the winter. I want you all to have time to have a chance to get a turkey tag over the counter for Calhoun County, Ill.
I am asked every year by my Missouri buddies how they can turkey hunt in Illinois. Here is how.
I rarely hunt the Illinois fifth spring turkey season. Most years the bugs are too annoying and the timber resembles a tropical rain forest.
However, last year I was introduced to a young man, Harrison Lane, by mutual friend Chris Leffert. Chris is the pastor at the First Baptist Church in Pittsfield, Ill.
I have spoken at this church several times and met Mr. Lane at one of those events. Lane is the owner/operator of Hollow Ground Guide Service. He manages right at 4,000 acres in Pike and Calhoun counties.
When I told him I had never hunted Calhoun County, he promptly invited me to join him for a turkey hunt this year. Fifth season permits were available over the counter, so we were set.
