The 1861 and 1862 Civil War battles of Wilson’s Creek and Pea Ridge played a critical role in keeping Missouri in the Union.
Today, both sites are maintained and protected by the National Park Service. I have been fortunate to visit both sites. If you love nature or history, these sites are indeed worth the trip.
The first major Civil War battle west of the Mississippi River took place at Wilson’s Creek. Visitors today may not hear the sounds of war, but by exploring the grounds they can imagine what took place on August 10, 1861.
The visitor center is an excellent way to start your visit. There are numerous displays and an educational film regarding the events that took place at Wilson’s Creek during the battle.
