The San Juan Worm

This month I’m going to teach you how to build the San Juan Worm.

Here’s the material we’ll be using:20160421_205048-1_1463839269187_resized

• Hook: Heavy wire nymph or curved shank hook sizes 8-14.

• Material: Ultra chenille curved shank hook size 12.

• Thread: 210 denier flat.

• Level: Easy.

My favorite way to tie it is a size 12 tan on a curved shanked hook.

Place hook in vise, being sure to leave the curve of the hook high in the vise. For a size 12 hook cut the chenille to 1-¼” in length and set it aside.

Start your thread right behind the eye of the hook, placing your wraps directly next to each other covering the shank of the hook completely to the bend of the (see photo). Then wrap the thread back over itself about 4 wraps (toward the eye) and attach the piece of chenille that you previously cut. When attaching the chenille leave about ¼” sticking out beyond the bend of the hook.
