The legend of the Gowrow

Popular among Ozark folklorists is the legend of Devil’s Hole Cave near the community of Self, Arkansas, in Boone County.

According to stories, the cavern is home to a creature nicknamed the “Gowrow”, which has been described as a “20 foot long lizard with tusks and claws.”

Apparently, there is more than one legend about the Gowrow in Arkansas, but one of them is at Devil’s Hole.

A more detailed description from Searcy County, Arkansas, says the Gowrow is “twenty feet in length with two tusks, large webbed feet ending in claws, a row of short horns along its back, and a long thin tail with a blade on the end.”
