Hermann, Mo., is well-known in Missouri for retaining and honoring its German roots.
Located on the Missouri River, the hillsides of Hermann are dotted with historic homes, wineries, eateries, bed and breakfasts, vineyards, churches, and graveyards mixed with monuments carved in both German and English.

One of the best ways to learn more about this town that has been the county seat of Gasconade County since 1842 is by taking a tour of the Deutschheim State Historic Site. Missouri State Parks offers a tour that packs a lot of bang for your buck!
I have been on this tour twice. Once in 2016 and the second was this past fall of 2024. I had different tour guides each time, with each one offering a wealth of knowledge to everyone in our groups.
The tours start at the site’s main building and office, but then meanders through the gardens and into the Pommer-Genter House.
