Star Seed & the Beaver King

By Matt Ankney

“The dam disrupts nature’s harmony. Animal people are suffering,” stammered Glyptodon.

Incredulous, paranoid eyes remaining locked on the gentle prisoner, flustered Beaver King snatched another crawfish from an ornamented silver bowl.

“Flood control is the future, my dear Glyptodon. Order, stability are what animal people want and need,” tossing the seasoned invertebrate into the air. “It’s called progress,” he said, catching it in his mouth, emphasizing the dramatic proclamation with a powerful slap of his large, leathery tail.

Glyptodon’s despondent head fell forward, understanding the futility of not only the river blockade but also any exchange with an impulsive rodent monarch the size of a Black bear.
