I found my recollections about my train rides down to the farm brought out some email interest.
I receive emails from Mike Hayes often. I remember Mike from high school and his teaching and coaching at Field School.
Mike shared the following:
“Hello, Bob. In this past week’s article you were talking about the L&N water tower and mentioned the L&N Railroad that used to come through town.
“I rode that train from Mt. Vernon to St. Louis when I was 5 years old. I went with my grandma to visit some friends. Remember that trip very well as it was my first train trip.
“I also remember hearing the whistle from the train on hot summer nights. We slept with the windows open and a window fan. We did not get a window AC until I was in high school. Thought we were in heaven when we got that.
