Remembering the Missouri Land Company of Scotland

Recently my good friend and Roaring River State Park Superintendent Mike Busekrus made me aware of a forgotten Scottish settlement in the Ozarks.

Mike and I were preparing for a presentation on 19th century Ozarks Christmas traditions at the park’s Christmas Candlelight Stroll.

Mike would be representing the German immigrants, and I would be discussing the Scots Irish celebration of New Year’s Eve (or Hogmanay) and “Old Christmas” on January 6.

He had been researching local history and ran across an interesting notation on a 1909 Barry County plat map, the “Missouri Land Company of Scotland,” also known as the “Scotch Land Company.”
