Plan a visit to the Portage Des Sioux Historic Area

Portage Des Sioux, Missouri, today is a small town on the Mississippi River with a population of around 328 people.

But the town and the land around it is a very historical area.

Portage Des Sioux is near the confluence of three of the country’s major rivers — the Mississippi, the Missouri, and the Illinois Rivers.

Before the Europeans arrived, the native Indian tribes used these rivers as major transportation routes.

This area around Portage Des Sioux is on a peninsula of land bounded by the Mississippi River on the north and the Missouri River on the south, with the two rivers coming together at their confluence in the east.

Black Walnut Cemetery.
