L’amour in the Ozarks

February is the month of love, so here are a few old Ozark superstitions for you, courtesy of the late great folklorist Vance Randolph.

I don’t believe I’ve shared these particular ones before. They are quaint, and perhaps few folks ever really took them very seriously, but then again, maybe a lot of people did.

At any rate, they’re fun to read, so here goes:

• When a lot of sparks fly from a chimney it means young folks are courting inside.

• A girl can marry whomever she wants if she’ll just wash her face in early morning dew at sunrise on May 1. Also, if she looks into a spring that same morning, before breakfast, she will see her future husband.
