This is the “Year of the Horse” in China. I am beginning to think that for us, it may be the “Year of the Coyote”.
Starting about a month ago, in the middle of the night, two coyotes were fighting in our backyard. It sounded intense and even Hank, my 90-pound Labrador retriever, looked worried.

For the past six years, we had foxes in our backyard, but this year the coyotes have taken over. After several nights of intense fighting, the fighting stopped but this past week, a coyote was howling three feet from our bedroom window in the middle of the night.
Then yesterday, I took Hank on an extended walk on a trail near Annie’s horse barn. I had not walked this particular trail for months.
There is a spot on this trail where the woods come to a point at the edge of our upper hay field. When I was 30 yards from the edge of those woods, I heard an extended series of short yips coming from inside the woods.
