Hunting pen-raised quail

Once I had the privilege of hunting wild quail at the personal hunting lodge of a very famous person.

The lodge was located in northern Florida and it was an exquisite place. There were at least nine separate bedrooms in the lodge and a formal dining room with wonderful food, but the quail hunting was even more spectacular.

The owner had only wild quail on his property — which consisted of 8,000 acres — and he did not allow any pen-raised quail to be released there because they would “taint” the wild ones.

Most of those picturesque southern quail hunting plantations that you read about in the fancy hunting magazines now use pen-raised quail, but not this one.

Pen-raised quail are notoriously stupid and become tame way too soon.

The trip had been arranged by some lawyer friends of mine in Atlanta. On the first day, while hunting on the property of this famous person, we found at least 15 coveys of wild quail and it was a great hunt.
