Ghost town of Allenton still has plenty to offer tourists

As one travels I-44 in western St. Louis County, it’s easy to notice Six Flags tucked into the hillside in the ever-expanding town of Eureka.

For some travelers, it may be difficult to imagine that nestled across the interstate from the theme park is a ghost town.

There are conflicting reports about when exactly Allenton, Missouri, was established. I found one article that states the town started in 1853, while another said 1870.

Regardless of when it came about, the town never really grew bigger than approximately 70 homes, a post office, a schoolhouse, and a few other important spots small towns are known for like a house of worship and a tavern or two.
