One of my mom’s tips that sticks with me to this day is “follow the brown signs.”

I notice them all the time and think of her. If time allows, I follow them to see where they lead.
Imagine my surprise when recently I saw newly-installed brown signs on the incredibly well-beaten path of Highway 47 near the city limits of Washington, Missouri.
I followed the signage to Caldwell Memorial Wildlife Area. This spot is packed with natural beauty and an incredibly interesting history, yet I had driven past it for decades without knowing it existed.
The land was originally a historic farm. In 1975 Sam Caldwell donated the property to the Missouri Department of Conservation.
