In fact, there is a silver mine near Fredericktown in the Mark Twain National Forest.
The Silver Mines Recreation Area is where the abandoned Einstein Mine is located on a trail along the St. Francois River.
Silver was mined there along with tungsten and lead from 1877 to 1946, when mining ceased completely.
I have hiked that trail several times to the old mine which is now boarded up but you can still see into the mine opening.
When I went to Philmont Scout Camp with my son years ago, we visited an old mining camp with a gold mine.
