I like to stop when I am traveling after seeing a sign along the road that there is a historic marker ahead.
These can be just a sign, marker, monument, or even a statue.
There are many different kinds of historic signs and markers in Missouri, but some of my favorites are the Missouri County Historic Markers that were installed in every county in Missouri by the State Historical Society and the State Highway Commission.

The State Historical Society of Missouri began a 10-year program in 1951 to place historical markers in highway turnouts and roadside parks throughout the state.
The markers had been grouped into 10 vacation regions set out by the Missouri Division of Tourism.

Because of the rebuilding and widening of roads and the construction of interstate highways, some markers were moved from their original locations and some were placed in front of county courthouses.
