‘Discovering’ the rain crow & bullbat

I like to birdwatch, I just wish I knew more about the winged creatures, or at least enough to identify them all.

For instance, reading some Ozark folklore lately, I came across references to the rain crow. I’d never heard of that bird, but I looked it up and it sure enough exists in the Ozarks.

Its actual name is the yellow-billed cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus). Supposedly it likes to call right before rain storms, which is what gave it its nickname.

I even listened to a recording of its distinctive call. I’m sure I’ve heard it myself at some point, probably many times in my life, because I’ve never lived anywhere else but the Ozarks.

I’m sure I’ve seen the rain crow in person, too. I just don’t remember. But I’ll be on the lookout now.
