This past summer was a blur. Somewhere between my daughter’s wisdom teeth removal, summer school classes, and other activities we found a moment to visit our dear friends in Oklahoma for the first time since 2019.
They live just north of Tulsa, so it isn’t that bad of a drive through Missouri down I-44 into their part of the world.
During our visit, I started looking at the map for interesting and affordable things to see near their home.
Oologah Lake caught my interest, but as we drove towards the dam, that’s when I noticed a sign pointing to Will Rogers Birthplace. A detour was in order!
Dog Iron Ranch was a pleasant surprise! With a spectacular view of Lake Oologah, this historic site is just two miles east of the town of Oologah, Oklahoma, and just an hour-and-a-half from the Missouri border.
Will’s father, Clem, ran this ranch that Will was born on. At the time this was Indian Territory, and Clem played a big role not just in ranching, but in politics as well.
