I have a duck blind right on the banks of the Mississippi River. I tend to be a minimalist and this is definitely a minimalist’s duck blind, with three hog panels stuffed with willows, three plastic chairs and two bags of decoys, similar to the way I hunted ducks when I was a teenager.
I was hunting several weeks ago on a blue-bird day, 70 degrees and nary a duck to be seen all afternoon.
So, I started cutting more willows and stuffing them into the hog panels, all the while occasionally looking for ducks in the air or on the water.
At some point, I noticed what appeared to be a large root wad and tree trunk floating downstream pretty far out in the main channel of the river.
It looked as though the root wad was moving faster that the current, and that seemed odd but I got distracted.
