In my 20s I read a book that deeply inspired me. It was Jimmy Buffett’s “A Pirate Looks at Fifty.”
My mother and I were huge fans of Jimmy, and it was she that suggested the book for my literary consumption.
The impact it had was powerful. I studied lines of it more thoroughly than any scholarly text that landed in my hands before it.
I found myself literally taking notes and sharing my thoughts with people I trusted about seeing more of my own country, trying new things, having more fun, but always remembering my roots.
Now it is I who is sitting here looking at 50. Part of me thinks I need to reread the book since I am obviously a bit different than I was a few decades ago!
