Skunks are a common animal in Missouri. But most people don’t want to come in contact with one.
They are often smelled before they are seen and they can produce a very bad musky scent when they are provoked.
They can aim and spray at will from glands at the base of their tail.
There are two types of skunks in Missouri — the striped skunk and the spotted skunk.
The striped skunk is the most common with black fur and a white stripe running from the top of its head down its back, dividing to become two stripes on each side with a prominent long-haired tail.
