Twelve-year-old Coalby Carney stepped out of the truck in western Colorado near Grand Junction for the third day of his first mule deer hunt.
He was with his dad, Cliff, and they would be hunting public ground.

This young man, however, had already gotten some very valuable deer hunting experience in Oklahoma.
He completed his hunter education course in 2019 and has taken 2 white-tailed bucks and one doe there. In Colorado you must at least 12 years old to deer hunt.
The weather was overcast with constant 10-15 MPH westerly winds. The temp was in the mid-30’s. There was a storm coming in later that day.
Cliff really wanted to get his son a shot before the impending snow started.
It was the afternoon of that third day and this father-son team was ready for some action. And action is exactly what they got.
