Autumn hiking in the Ozarks

By Lisa Adkins

My favorite aspect of hiking the Ozarks in autumn is not the changing colors of the leaves, but the chance to witness the precipitation cycle firsthand.

The atmosphere adopts the spooky vibe of autumn and produces a spectacular fog show I enjoy watching.

Warm September and October days quickly turn into cool evenings in the Ozarks. The steep hillsides of plateaus and deep valleys cradling spring-fed streams create ideal conditions for observing this natural process.

Early in the morning, the moments before the sun rises above the horizon line, or as evening fades into twilight before the darkness, are the optimal viewing times.
