Harsh, terrible, brutal, frigid and miserable were just a few of the words said in the lodge at Shuhart Creek Whitetails on the opening morning of the Illinois Youth spring turkey season of 2022.
The temp was 28 degrees with a constant 20 mph wind and gusts up to 40. This was not the ideal morning for a turkey hunt.
This was the first of several obstacles that my grandson Connor (CJ) and I faced that morning. But when your season only lasts 2 days, you hunt, no matter what.
For the second year in a row CJ and I were the guests of Rich Burian, owner of Shuhart Creek Whitetails. This Hancock County, Illinois, outfitter features the finest whitetail deer hunting in west-central Illinois and the best turkey hunting anywhere.
The lodge is great, the gobblers are plentiful and the guys there are friendly and very helpful.
