Harsh, terrible, brutal, frigid and miserable were just a few of the words said in the lodge at Shuhart Creek Whitetails on the opening morning of the Illinois Youth spring turkey season of 2022. Â
The temp was 28 degrees with a constant 20 mph wind and gusts up to 40. This was not the ideal morning for a turkey hunt.
This was the first of several obstacles that my grandson Connor (CJ) and I faced that morning. But when your season only lasts 2 days, you hunt, no matter what.
For the second year in a row CJ and I were the guests of Rich Burian, owner of Shuhart Creek Whitetails. This Hancock County, Illinois, outfitter features the finest whitetail deer hunting in west-central Illinois and the best turkey hunting anywhere.
The lodge is great, the gobblers are plentiful and the guys there are friendly and very helpful.
