A Florida tower moves north

Today, it seems some want to move south to the “Sun Belt.” But thanks to some help and ingenuity from Irwin Zimmerman of Rutledge, Missouri, the fire tower from near Benton, Florida, has turned the table.

Irwin, like many including myself, has held a longtime fascination with the towers. My interest first showed over half a century ago at Mudlick Fire Tower near my grandparents farm at Patterson, Missouri.

The towers became my hobby and a few years ago I even wrote a book, “Remembering Missouri’s Lookout Towers.”

I have also written articles in the national FFLA magazine, the River Hills Traveler, and a number of Missouri newspapers.

I received an email a few weeks ago from another tower hobbyist, Elijah Armstrong, that he had gotten wind of a tower that was now up near Rutledge.
