Sunday may well be the most important day in Vermont. All the little churches with their tall slender spires standing at attention in dress whites serve the purpose of lighthouses in this overwhelming forest of trees.

It was just such a Sunday that I was let out at the bottom of the hill where stood our village’s only church.

As I walked up the driveway of what used to support horses and carriages, here was a huge tall friendly looking wild turkey.
