As a youngster growing up in Missouri, I had lots of opportunities to see the wonders of the Show-Me State.
Both of my parents were from Phelps County, but we lived and I was raised in Stoddard. So the hilly, curvy roadway between the flatland of the Bootheel and the hills of Central Missouri were pretty familiar.
We always had a stop at Van Buren, where my folks would enjoy of a cup of coffee and my brothers and I enjoyed a soft drink – all under the enormous photo mural in the old Big Spring Café. We always had ShowMe Adventures.
But beyond those trips, both of my folks shared their love of the beauty and majesty of the outdoors. I can remember family picnics where we would load up the car after church on Sunday and head to Big Spring, or to the Current River near Doniphan, or east toward Big Oak Tree State Park. They were wonderful times.
