The Way We Came9 viewsCherokees were ferried across the Mississippi River just north of Cape Girardeau during removal from their homelands in the south. This view from the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi and western Illinois was taken from Trail of Tears State Park. It is one similar to what the Cherokees may have seen before continuing their arduous journey across Missouri to Indian Territory in the winter of 1838-39. Kathleen Brotherton writes about the Trail of Tears in the July 2008 print edition of River Hills Traveler.
