It's our annual Deer Season Issue

Here we are with our annual deer hunting issue. How fast the seasons roll around.

We have more than 10 pages of deer hunting stories. One Page 1, we recap the rule changes for this deer season and Howard Helgenberg describes what it’s like when a hunt goes off perfectly.

Inside, Jeremy Koerber tells you how to get in physical shape for the hunt. Charlie Slovensy explains tailgate butchering and avoiding deer detection. Bill Cooper recounts a spooky deer hunt in the Irish Wilderness. Tim Huffman coaches us on deer stand safety. Don Rathert wishes he had learned his Army lessons about keeping his rifle clean. And Kathleen Brotherton recalls some humorous family memories from her husband’s deer hunts over the years.

Not everyone is a deer hunter. So, Jo Schaper and BrentCooper bring us some rarely seen views of Cannonball Cave and Davidson’s Blue Spring, from far beneath the surface of Lake Wappapello. The spring was the state’s 15th largest, in 1941, before the dam was completed and Wappapello’s waters covered it.

Jim and Donna Featherston guest write part of Pat Todd’s recipe column with a mouth-watering tribute to iron skillet cornbread.

Bob Todd tells us about a cold, wet but satisfying duck-hunting trip, Tom Fritsche details a float trip on the Buffalo in Northern Arkansas and we publish the second half of Dr. James Price’s account of the timber industry history of the Ripley County area. It’s a lot of good reading. I think you’ll enjoy it.
